Founder and Director

Dr. Bret A. Boyer, Founder and Director of the Center for Health and Coping, has worked for over 25 years, integrating therapies to facilitate psychological and physical health.  Fueled by his enthusiasm and dedication, Dr. Boyer is a therapist, a researcher, and a teacher of psychotherapies for facilitating optimal health. While attaining a Master or Arts degree in Behavior Analysis and Therapy from Southern Illinois University, a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Temple University, and completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Child and Family Psychology at The Division of Oncology of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Boyer has completed training in psychodynamic therapies, behavior therapies, cognitive behavior therapies, family systems therapies, biofeedback, and acceptance and mindfulness therapies.  In creating the Center for Health and Coping, Dr. Boyer has integrated these models of therapy, equipping him and the CHaC therapists to individualize the exact therapy to the needs and goals of each client.  Dr. Boyer founded the Family Health Psychology Center in 1997. He serves as Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Mercy Catholic Medical Center; as consultant to Integrated Diabetes Services, Surviving & Thriving; and as faculty to Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology.  He conducts research into the interaction of psychological and physical health for individuals with diabetes, cancer, spinal cord injuries, cardiac conditions, and other chronic health problems.  Dr. Boyer has authored and co-authored dozens of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and is the co-author/editor of The Comprehensive Handbook of Clinical Health Psychology.

Current on the research investigating the relationships among physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, aspects of health, Dr. Boyer offers his warmth and understanding to assist individuals, couples, and families grow to their optimal health and happiness.  At the Center for Health and Coping, Dr. Boyer has assembled resources to provide therapies that attend to the impact of physical health upon psychological health, the influence of psychological health upon physical health, as well as the relationship of psychological and physical health to spiritual growth.
